Treatment of an Etching Attached to a Mount

Brief Condition Report

This etching had suffered damages because of previous attempts to mount and remove the backing. Removing the current backing board, to which the object was attached with animal skin glue, was a top priority.

Brief Treatment Report

The original labels attached to the backing board with removed and kept. The thickness of the backing board was reduced mechanically, and remaining backing remnants were solubilised with water and scraped away. Any remaining remnants and adhesive were removed in a warm water bath. The object was washed and light bleached in an alkaline water bath. Foxing was spot-treated locally with hydrogen peroxide. Skinned areas in the image were reintegrated with pastel powder. After pressing, the object was remounted in a window mount and the original label was placed into a PE sleeve that was attached to the back on the mount.
