Retouching a 19th century Painted Photograph

This 19th century painted photograph mounted on a laminated wood-pulp board came to the studio for the purpose of image reintegration. The paint layer had suffered a number of small losses, some due to a previous mounting of the object. Some losses had been previously retouched with permanent marker, which could be removed with a solvent. Losses were retouched using a mixture of watercolour and gouache in order to best match the particular characteristics of the painted surface. A bespoke folio was made to house this object for storage, as the client did not want it framed for display.
